Olive oil can reverse liver damage from a high-fat diet.
Researchers from the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the Andalusian Center for Molecular Biology and Regenerative Medicine (Cabimer) and the Center for Biomedical Research in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (Ciberdem) have just published a study demonstrating the protective role of olive oil consumption. It has been proven that it is able to reverse liver damage in its diseases not caused by alcohol.
The results of a study conducted on mice suggest that Extra Virgin extra Virgin olive oil can reverse liver damage caused by a constant high-fat diet through activation of anti-inflammatory mechanisms in adipose tissue and modification of the lipid composition of the liver itself and cellular pathways that are activated at the same time.
The head of the study, Lourdes Varela, said that he had already initiated a second project in collaboration with TNO (the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research) of the Dutch center for the study of the effect of extra virgin olive oil at a more advanced stage of the disease of non-alcoholic liver obesity.
